Ash Wednesday

Wednesday, March 1, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of the season of Lent.  At FUMC Allen, we offer two worship opportunities to observe Ash Wednesday: the first at 7:00am in the Upper Room Chapel and the second at 7:00pm in the sanctuary.  Both services shall include the imposition of ashes, which is both a tangible and liturgical sign that you along with the Church have begun the sacred season of Lent and the journey to the cross. This sign also represents an act of repentance from sin and the knowledge that we will not live forever on earth.

“Ashes to Ashes. Dust to Dust. From the earth you came and to the earth you shall return.” Book of Common Prayer

“…The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:15 ESV

These are the words uttered as ashes are placed on your forehead. Both as a reminder of our need for forgiveness and that we will one day die.  It helps to get our priorities in order.
Lent includes 46 days leading up to Easter. Traditionally, we refer to it as the 40 days leading up to Easter because Sundays are not included in the count.  Sundays are not included because the day has long been considered the day of resurrection, which is why we worship on Sundays.
The season of Lent is about practicing disciplines that further align us with the will of God. These disciplines lead us to a deeper belief in Jesus Christ. It is by belief that we are born again in the kingdom of God.  To be born again is desire Christ more and more and nothing else leading us once again to the practice of spiritual disciplines
