Back to School Bash = 293 Backpacks, 35 Bike Helmets, 25 Haircuts, 10 Physicals, and 230 Pairs of Shoes
Going back to school can be a nervous experience for any child. But arriving without the needed supplies is even a harder way to start the year off on a positive note. Thankfully, the people of Allen realize this and did not want any child walking into a classroom in our town unprepared.
On Saturday, August 16, 2014 FUMC Allen had the honor of hosting families from Allen, Lovejoy, and Lucas at this year’s Back To School Bash. It is such a wonderful day. Excitement filled the air about a new school year starting.
As the doors opened, a gentle buzz of activity entered the building that lasted throughout the morning. Seventy volunteers were ready to greet our guests with kindness.
One volunteer offered to help in any capacity, willing to serve in another area than the one to which she was assigned. Later, she had the task of helping each child select which back pack they wanted. At first, the children were a bit timid but when she handed them the backpack they selected, their face lit up with excitement. Needless to say, this particular volunteer did not want to move to any other job!
FUMC Allen and every organization involved was THE CHURCH that day. We met neighbors we did know, and we made new friends.
Next year, carve out some time on this day to serve at the Back to School Bash. It is an opportunity to seek, engage, and encourage a little one as well as their family that just might be a little nervous about going back to school.
