FUMC Allen’s Music Ministry is pleased to announce the Centenary College Choir IN CONCERT in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of Allen, 601 S Greenville Ave, on Friday, October 3, at 7:00pm. The concert is FREE with a love offering to be collected during the event.
Hailed as “America’s Singing Ambassadors” by the press, the Centenary College Choir has traveled the world for seven decades, constantly exploring new and productive avenues in the world of collegiate choral music. This innovative spirit has been evidenced in the Choir’s unique and diverse manner of programming, a repertoire that ranges from Bach to Broadway, world folk music to contemporary church music, and oratorio to opera. The Choir seeks to engage audiences not only through an eclectic repertoire but also through emotional, heart-felt music making.
The annual schedule of the Choir usually finds the group offering around 35 regional performances in an array of tour concerts, college ceremonies, church and alumni relations programs, recruitment activities, and other Shreveport/Bossier City community events. Fall highlights of the 2014-2015 season include the celebrated annual Rhapsody in View (October 25-26), Festival Worship with clinician John Ferguson (November 9), and special Christmas performance including the annual television program broadcast throughout the Ark-La-Tex. Later, in March 2015, the Choir will join in a performance of “An Eclectic Requiem” featuring music of the great German Austrian masters Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms.
Organized in 1941 by Dr. A.C. “Cheesy” Voran, the Centenary College Choir has concertized throughout the world, giving concerts in 32 nations on six continents. The Choir has sung for frontline troops in Korea, the Presidents of the United States and Switzerland, the Queen of Denmark, the leaders of NATO and the Prime Minister of Thailand. In addition to performing in most areas of the United States, the Choir has toured three times in the Orient, made three tours of Great Britain, six extensive tours of Europe, two to Russia, as well as Poland, Scandinavia, and South Africa. Recent tours include: Australia and New Zealand in 2009, culminating with a final solo ensemble concert in the world famous Sydney Opera House; Brazil and Argentina in 2011; and New York and Carnegie Hall debut in 2012. In May 2013 the Choir returned to Italy for an exciting two week tour, singing in some of the great Cathedrals in the world. May 2015 will see the Choir traveling through Central Europe for a music lovers tour of the home cities of Bach, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Brahms, and others. Receiving a very rare honor for any organization, the Choir has been invited to The White House seven times to give programs of Christmas music for special guests of President and Mrs. Bill Clinton and President and Mrs. George W. Bush.
The young women and men of the Choir come from many areas of the nation and other countries and represent most of the academic majors offered by the College. Members of the Choir receive one of the finest college educations possible while making enduring friendships as a part of the Choir family and tradition. Members are selected by auditions held November through February for the following term. Persons wishing to audition should contact the director of the choir to arrange an appointment. The Choir is affiliated with the Hurley School of Music and offers scholarships for all its members. For those interested in majoring in music, the College offers an extensive Bachelor of Arts Music degree with several optional areas of emphasis, including performance, choral music, sacred/church music, and composition.
