ChangeTheWorld_GlobeLogoChange the World Allen kicks off on Friday, May 15, 7:00pm-9:00pm, with a musical celebration at First United Methodist Church, 601 S Greenville Ave, Allen Tx. This evening of entertainment features a concert by the Connections Band (, well known in the North Texas Conference for their excellent covers of 70s favorites from the Doobie Brothers, Elton John, Dan Fogelberg, among others. Our Change The World kick-off event features the Connections Band’s popular Chicago/Eagles tribute performance. Traditionally, the band collects a love offering for a worthy cause and at this May 15 event, all proceeds collected benefit Change The World Allen.

In 2009, RETHINK CHURCH, a ministry of United Methodist Communications, kicked off Change The World Weekend, an initiative designed for the local church to take on service projects in their communities and get others involved in volunteer activities.

First United Methodist Church of Allen joined the movement in 2012 by hosting and funding a three-day weekend of service projects. A laity-led planning committee planned, organized, and filled more than 600 volunteer opportunities in that first year. After the final tally was taken, volunteers from the church and the community had completed more than 2,500 service hours supporting local non-profit organizations with labor, food, clothing, and home repairs.

The movement caught on in the community, and this year’s annual weekend of service has been adopted by the Allen Ministerial Alliance, an organization of church pastors and leaders whose goal is to care, coordinate, and connect with those in need. This group, now known to the community as 3C Allen, includes not only local UMC churches– FUMC Allen, Creekwood UMC, Suncreek UMC, Living Life Church, and Good Shepherd UMC–but also other denominations including First Baptist Church of Allen, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, First Presbyterian Church of Allen, Greenville Oaks Church of Christ, The Harvest, and others.

Event organizers, all volunteers themselves, have been working since 2014 to identify and define projects, ranging from home improvement, yard work, collections of food, shoes, clothing, books, and personal care items, sorting and packaging collected items, and supporting numerous Collin County non-profit agencies with labor and other services. The 2015 goal for Change the World Allen is to document more than 8,000 volunteer service hours.

All in all, volunteers from more than 40 churches, nonprofit organizations, and local businesses from Collin County will participate on May 15-17 and dedicate three days to the mission of providing service and making an impact in the local community. Allen, Lucas, and Fairview citizens (and their friends) can visit and choose volunteer opportunities from a list of 96 community projects.

On Sunday, May 17, FUMC Allen invites you to their Change The World Allen worship service at 9:30am in the sanctuary. On this special day, the 8:15am and 11:00 services will not meet, including The Way, our 11:00am teaching service. Sunday school and COLLIDE youth ministry is canceled on this day so that our congregation and our guests can serve in the mission field.
