Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which begins Wednesday, February 10. At FUMC Allen, we offer two worship opportunities to observe Ash Wednesday: the first at 7:00am in the Upper Room Chapel and the second at 7:00pm in the sanctuary. Both services shall include the imposition of ashes, which is both a tangible and liturgical sign that you along with the Church have begun the sacred season of Lent and the journey to the cross. This sign also represents an act of repentance from sin and the knowledge that we will not live forever on earth.
“Ashes to Ashes. Dust to Dust. From the earth you came and to the earth you shall return.“
“Repent, and believe the gospels.”
These are the words uttered as ashes are placed on your forehead. Both as a reminder of our need for forgiveness and that we will one day die. It helps to get our priorities in order.
Lent includes 46 days leading up to Easter. Traditionally, we refer to it as the 40 days leading up to Easter because Sundays are not included in the count. Sundays are not included because the day has long been considered the day of resurrection, which is why we worship on Sundays.
People quite often give up something during the season of Lent as a sign act of faithfulness to Jesus who gave up everything for our salvation. As a congregation, FUMC Allen is challenged especially to give up time and adopt these four disciplines:
- Attend worship every Sunday of Lent unless you are sick or out of town.
- Read the Gospel of John. We will provide guides that outline a reading plan.
- Participate in a small group that is studying John’s Gospel. If you want to go deeper, participate in the study of John: The Gospel of Light and Life by Rev. Adam Hamilton.
- Devote time each of the 40 days to intentional prayer. Consider the ACTS model as a guide: Adoration. Confession. Thanksgiving. Supplication.

Join us this Lenten Season as we dive into Pastor Adam Hamilton’s book, John: the Gospel of Light and Life. We invite you to worship each week as we explore the major themes of the gospel and use our daily reading plan as you read to read the gospel of John yourself.
Copies of Rev. Hamilton’s books are available this Sunday in the South entrance gathering area.
On Wednesdays during Lent, we’ll offer a special time of contemplative worship, reflective tunes, silent prayer and meditation on scripture, and Holy Communion. Participants are asked to enter and depart the chapel in silence to maintain the reflective and introspective time for others.
