Project Transformation (PT), now a national organization, was born right here in North Texas in 1998. Building partnerships between college-age young adults, children, and churches, one of PT’s goals is to address the achievement gap for children from low-income communities.
Most kids will experience a “summer slide.” In middle-high income homes, children have limitless access to books, educational tools, and interested adults, but that’s simply not the case for many children from low-income families. Reading proficiency is a key predictor of a child’s future success. Yet, 80% of low-income children are behind grade level in reading. PT provides community-oriented summer day camp programming for these children and youth.
But Project Transformation can’t do it alone which is why we are a partner church. As a partner, we have made a commitment to:
- Support financially a young adult PT Corp member
- Provide 12-15 volunteers Mon-Thu, June 18-21, 9:15am-12:00pm, for a week of reading one-on-one with children at Wapes Memorial UMC in Denison.
- Provide dinner and activities for a Family Fun Night on Thu, June 21, 5:30pm-8:00pm.
- Pray for Project Transformation’s ministry.
Our Project Transformation intern this year is Rebecca Martin, who was active in our church when she was younger. She actually was part of the 2011 Confirmation class! Her outgoing personality and love of children will make her an excellent PT intern. Rebecca is currently studying elementary education at Texas State University. Rebecca, along with all of the PT Corp members, will be commissioned for this ministry at opening worship at annual conference on Sunday, June 3.
Now we just need YOU to be part of this transforming ministry. Please consider how God might be calling you to serve in this life-changing program. If you have questions or need more information, contact Rev. Jessica Wright, 972.727.8261.
